How many burp cloths do I need
Before we get into the recommended amount of cloths a baby will need, let’s chat about them in general. What are they, what are they made of, what are they used for, where can you find the best burp cloths, and even how to make your own burp cloths.
What is a burping cloth?
Spit up cloths are typically used to clean up spit up from your baby, or can be used to prevent spit up from getting on your shoulder when burping the baby.
They’re typically made from cotton and can be thrown in the washer for a mindless wash, nothing fancy, which makes it easy to toss everything in the wash at once.
Where can you find the best cloths?
Burp cloths are typically readily available wherever baby products are sold. You can find them at your local stores or online. I like to purchase products online as often there are better options, more unique options than in the local store.
I love Amazon, who doesn’t? You can find all sorts of cute and functional spit up cloths online.
Another option for handmade burp cloths would be Etsy. You can find personalized cloths on that website.
Make your own spit up cloths
If you’re a DIY’er and comfortable with the sewing machine, you may want to make your own burp cloths. There are so many adorable fabrics available online to choose from, I’m sure you could make something completely unique and functional at the same time.
What you’ll need when making a burp cloth
- fabric
- iron
- scissors
- rotary cutter is helpful
- straight pins
- thread
- sewing machine
I’ve seen many people say a nice flannel is what they choose for their burp cloths, not cotton.
I’ve seen it said this helps absorb the spit up better. However, many burp cloths are cotton and I used cotton for my boys and never had a problem. I would research this more if you choose to make your own in order to use the best fabric for your needs.
If you would like to make your own burp cloths I recommend going to Google or YouTube and typing something such as “DIY burp cloths” and see what pulls up. I found this video on YouTube you may find helpful. Simply click to watch.
How many burp cloths do you need
Typically speaking, you’ll want anywhere from 8-15 burp cloths for infants and babies. If I had a baby today I’d choose about 10-15 burp cloths if I planned on doing laundry daily or every other day.
Some babies do spit up more than others but in general babies will spit up frequently, so it is good to have many to grab for. You’ll want them in your diaper bag for when you’re out and about, in the car, and at home. Make the location easy to get to and I’d have at least one on hand when your holding the baby.
